Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between karate and taekwondo?
Taekwondo is the Korean version of karate. The techniques are very similar. Most “Karate” schools in the U.S. are actually teaching taekwondo.

What age do you have to be?
We teach children as young as 4 years old. We have a special program for 4 – 5 year olds called Lil’ Dragons. Our Junior program is for 6 – 12 year olds. We also have programs for adults and teens.

Am I too old to start taekwondo?
Probably not!  In fact taekwondo can help you feel years younger.  We work on the very things that health professionals recommend to fight aging: flexibility, strength, and aerobic conditioning.  We work with each student at their own pace so that you will never feel overwhelmed.

My child is not good at other sports (or not athletic). Can he/she be good at Taekwondo?
Definitely! Many children choose taekwondo because it is a great activity for children who are not competitive in team sports. At Flower Mound Taekwondo, we teach each child at his/her own pace. They are not measured against each other. There is no “second string” or “alternate” players at Flower Mound Taekwondo, and no one sits on the bench.

My child is in (baseball, basketball, soccer, etc.).
Can he take taekwondo classes too?
Yes, many of our students are here to enhance their training for team sports. Most sports require excellent focus, agility, balance, and coordination, but they don’t adequately teach these skills during team practice. We teach these skills on a level that they will never get in their team practice.  If you make Taekwondo your children’s core activity, they will have a serious advantage over other players. Our flexible schedule allows the athlete to train around his team’s practice schedule.

Will my child become more violent?
No, actually the opposite will happen. We train not only how to use martial arts, but also the correct application of martial arts. We train students to know when martial arts may be used, and more importantly when not to use their skills.  We teach how to avoid conflict. The confidence that our students gain tends to keep them out of physical altercations.

Can my child learn how to defend himself against bullies?
Yes, your child will learn effective self defense skills. More importantly, we will teach your child how to avoid physical conflicts and give him/her the confidence that makes him/her an undesirable target of bullies.

How often are the classes?
We offer classes for juniors and adults 6 days a week. A student may come to as many classes as they like, but we recommend at least 2 classes per week.  Lil’ Dragon classes are 3 days a week.

Can we come watch a class?
Definitely! We actually recommend that you come in and try a class. It will be a fun experience, and you will get a better feel for it. Then you can decide whether you like it.

What do I need to wear for class?
For a first class, you can wear a t-shirt and loose fitting pants or even shorts. We wear a traditional white karate uniform. If you decide to join, you will get a uniform. The uniform is required for belt testing.
